Nigerians divided over Obasanjo’s “harsh” comment on late Buruji Kashamu

4 Min Read

The letter of Olusegun Obasanjo, former Nigerian President regarding the sudden demise of Senator Buruji Kashamu has sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians.

In the letter, Obasanjo noted  although  late Kashamu employed political gimmicks to evade justice, none of his antics could protect him from the cold hands of death.

The former President’s condolence remarks have generated controversy among Nigerians.

Those who subscribed to the thought that one must never speak ill of the dead, described Obasanjo’s letter an  insult to the memory of the deceased as well as his grieving family.

However, other citizens who do not share the same opinion, aver the former lawmaker’s death should not be an excuse to shy away from the truth of the “questionable” life he lived.

This was in reference to Kashamu’s alleged plot that foiled his extradition to the United States over drug-related charges.

Here are some of the reactions culled from Twitter;

@ayofayose, former Governor of Ekiti state wrote

It is regrettable that Obasanjo could say what he said about Buruji Kashamu after his death and when he can no longer question him. Why didn’t he say that when Kashamu was alive?”

@habanna007

 I’ll say that in this life or the next,no man can be as “unforgiving” as baba Obasanjo🤦‍♂️.

Man is legit “a heart of stone” P.S  The content of the letter is a naked truth also. Damn!

@DrJoeAbah

Hmmm. This supposed Obasanjo letter. I thought that our culture is that every fight ends once one of the parties die? Or is it only in my area?

@sannisidney

Senator Kashamu died on Saturday due 2 #COVID19 complications at a Lagos hospital.

Tins u should know about him
He sued former President, #Obasanjo, 4 libel for stating that Kashamu was a Fugitive 4rm US justice.

Dere was no Federal High Court to stop his extradiction by death.

@EZEAGU_1

No eulogy. No sugar coated unmerited praise. Straight forward condemnation of wrong doing and evil. We should do more of sober reflection at death of people rather than cheap praises

@niiaryerteygh

The hard truth though. Obasanjo is a culprit himself. It reminds me time this

Obasanjo letter

@ayobankole

Another episode of hypocrisy when people die. I don’t know why Obasanjo is getting backlash, esp as he has always been a cold hearted unforgiving blunt man. May Kashamu RIP. But his death doesn’t change that he was a fugitive. Live well so people don’t have to lie when you die.

@akinwandeoluwas

Exactly, Obasanjo was being plain honest. The backlash of his letter testifies to the rot of our society.

Everything shouldn’t be politicised. Abba Kyari, Ajimobi, Buruji and the likes are not saints, and that’s obvious to the blind.

@Zikiru201

It is when all these politians die that their friends and foes start pouring out condolence messages, and paint then like they were saints. At least, someone hit the nail on the end.
