Face masks branded with party logos banned at polling units – INEC warns

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says face masks branded with political party logos are prohibited from polling units on election days.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu stated this Wednesday at a town hall meeting in Nasarawa state with political parties and other election stakeholders, Premium Times reported.

The electoral body is preparing for the Nasarawa Central constituency state House of Assembly bye-election on August 8, as well as 15 others bye-elections across the nation.

The warning also comes as Edo and Ondo states prepare for gubernatorial elections in September and October respectively.

Yakubu said the August 8 bye-election, the first to be conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria, would help the commission better prepare for others ahead.

The INEC boss stated, “No face masks, no voting, but there is a need for clarification on this. The commission is not insisting on a surgical face mask. But any face covering would do on Election Day.

“Face mask and face covering that are branded with a political party logo would not be allowed because it would look like campaigning.”
