EFCC Charge Two Lawyers to Court for Rigging NBA Election For Paul Usoro

2 Min Read

Two lawyers have been charged to court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), for allegedly rigging the 2018 election of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

John Demide and Sarah Ajibola were charged to a Federal High Court in Lagos on 14 counts of conspiracy and rigging by the anti-graft commission for the 2018 NBA elections conducted electronically at the time.

The electoral committee at the time declared Paul Usoro (SAN) as winner of the election with 4,509 votes ahead of rivals, Arthur Okafor (SAN) with 4,423 votes and Ernest Ojukwu (SAN) with 3,313 votes at the time. The other contestants however rejected the results of the election saying the results had been manipulated.

According to the EFCC, the defendants conspired to alter the email addresses and phone numbers of at least 1004 eligible NBA voters with the intention that the rigged data will be acted upon as genuine during the conduct of the election.

EFCC further accused Demide and Ajibola of fraudulently making use of the Supreme Court Enrollment Numbers of other lawyers to vote in favour of Mr. Paul Usoro.

The anti-graft commission said the defendants acted contrary to section 27(1) (b) of the Cyber crime (Prohibition) Act 2015 and were liable to be published under section 13 of the act.
