100% increase in train fare unjust, insensitive – Shehu Sani berates Amaechi, ministry

Senator for Kaduna Central in the 8th Senate, Shehu Sani, has condemned what he described as “unjust” and “insensitive” increment in train fares for the Abuja to Kaduna service.

Sani, who has made no secret of using the service, took a swipe at the Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi and the transport ministry for the increment in fares.

Amaechi had told journalists on Saturday that the fare would double due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Giving a reason for the increment, the minister said, “previously, a coach carried 88 passengers but when we resume the service, a coach will carry just 40 passengers.”

Before the government closed train services due to the pandemic, Daily Post reported, travellers paid N3,000 for first-class express trips, while normal first-class trip was N2,500.

Also, the charge for economy express trip was N1,500 and economy normal trip: N1,300.

The senator said the increment would adversely affect the masses that form the large chunk of passengers.

Sani said that since power is transient, the minister should remember he would be returning to the same people after his service.

He stated these in a tweet on Monday morning.

He wrote, “To the transportation minister @ChibuikeAmaechi and the ministry;100% increase in train fare is unjust, unfair, soulless & insensitive.

“Make things easier for the people when you are on top of the rock of power, you will meet with them when you are back to the base of life.”
