Three men sentenced to death in Iran for engaging in protests have gained the sympathy of US President Donald Trump, who tweeted in Persian (Iran’s lingual franca) to demand their release.

The Herald can report that Iran’s Supreme Court affirmed a sentence passed on the three male protesters, Amirhossein Moradi, Mohammad Rajabi and Saeed Tamjidi. The trio were linked to deadly protests in November 2019.

Spokesman, Gholamhossein Esmaili said on Tuesday that the sentences were “confirmed by the Supreme Court after the defendants and their attorneys appealed”.

In his tweet on Wednesday, President Trump called global attention to the detainees’ ordeal.

He urged the Iranian authorities to halt the planned executions that are expected “momentarily”, saying they send “terrible signals to the world”.

Trump tweeted, “Three individuals were sentenced to death in Iran for participating in protests. The execution is expected momentarily. Executing these three people sends a terrible signal to the world and should not be done! #StopExecutionsInIran”

Human rights groups like Amnesty International have called on Iran’s Supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, to overturn the verdicts, citing reported discrepancies in the case and mistreatment of defendants while in detention.
