UFC Lightweight Champion, Khabib Normagomedov Loses Dad

Khabib Nurmagomedov’s father, Abdulmanap, sadly has died due to COVID-19 complications, local media reports.

The news broke this morning that Abdulmanap tragically lost his life after battling with coronavirus over the last few weeks.

Not only was he Khabib’s father, he was also his coach, so the news will come as a tragic blow and loss to the lightweight champion and the rest of his family and working team.

Abdulmanap was 57 and died in a hospital in Moscow.

He had initially suffered a heart attack after being diagnosed with coronavirus, which required emergency bypass surgery, after which he was twice placed into a medically-induced coma.

At the time, his condition had been reported by doctors as ‘serious but stable’, but sadly it’s clear that things took a turn for the worse, eventually ending with him losing his life.

Abdulmanap, just like any trainer and father, was vital to Khabib’s career in UFC.

With him by his side, the Russian has managed to win all 28 of his professional fights, including 12 with Dana White’s promotion.

The Eagle is the current light heavyweight champion and has picked up impressive wins over the likes of Dustin Poirier, Conor McGregor and Al Iaquinta.

Abdulmanap was by Khabib’s side when he visited Russia’s President Vladimir Putin following his victory over McGregor at UFC 229.

Khabib was supposed to fight Tony Ferguson earlier this year, but due to the pandemic he was stranded in his homeland of Russia, resulting in him missing the event with Justin Gaethje stepping in for him.

Our thoughts and our condolences go to all of the Nurmagomedov family at this truly horrible time.
