Barcelona captain, Lionel Messi has hit 700 goals for club and country, joining an elite squad of players to achieve the incredible feat.

He achieved the milestone when he converted a 50th-minute penalty against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night, less than a week after celebrating his 33rd birthday.

Messi achieved the record in 862 games, compared to his arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo who achieved same in 973 games late 2019.

Other football greats that hit 700 goals for club and country include Gerd Muller – 735 goals in 793 games; Ferenc Puskas – 746 goals in 754; Romario – 772 goals in 993 games; Josef Bican – 805 goals in 530 games; and Pele – 1,279 career goals, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

The diminutive Argentine is the second most-prolific goalscorer still active.

While 35-year-old Ronaldo has scored 728 goals in 1,005 games to sit top of the list, Messi has 700 goals in 862 games, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has 540 goals in 907 games, Luis Suarez has 472 goals in 637 games and Robert Lewandowski has 466 goals in 697 games.
