All is now set for a repeat of the Godwin Obaseki/Osagie Ize-Iyamu political battle witnessed in the 2016 gubernatorial election in Edo State.

This is as the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has ratified the candidacy of Ize-Iyamu as the party’s flagbearer in the September 19 gubernatorial election.

Also, Obaseki is on his way to be confirmed as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s candidate after his last challenger for the party’s ticket, Kenneth Imasuagbon, pulled out of the race. The Edo PDP guber primaries scheduled for today, June 25, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City is ongoing.

The 2,229 delegates for the primaries are expected to affirm Obaseki’s candidacy.

Meanwhile, APC NEC ratified Ize-Iyamu’s candidacy during a virtual meeting attended by President Muhammadu Buhari, 16 governors elected on the party’s platform and other top party leaders.

According to the Chairman, Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) and Kebbi State Governor, Atiku Bagudu, NEC also dissolved the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.

He told State House correspondents that the Mai Malla Buni-led Caretaker /Convention Committee was given six months by NEC to organise the election of the NEC members.

While Obaseki contested and won on the APC platform in 2016, Ize-Iyamu was the PDP candidate for the poll.
