2 Min Read

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Tuesday launched the distribution of relief items to victims of windstorm and communal clashes in Taraba.

The leader of the distribution team, Mr Igue Terungwa, formally showed the items to the Deputy Governor of the State, Haruna Manu, at Government House, Jalingo, before proceeding to commence the distribution.

Terungwa said the gesture was part of government’s efforts to ameliorate the sufferings of those whose houses were destroyed by a windstorm and those who lost their property during communal clashes in the state.

He also said that the items which included foodstuff, beddings, toiletries and building materials, worth millions of Naira, were to be distributed to seven local government areas in the state.

Terungwa said that “170 households in Bali, 240 in Donga and 100 in Ussa local government areas respectively that were affected by communal clashes had been earmarked to benefit.”

Others to benefit from gesture are 150 households in Jalingo, 200 in Gassol, 385 in Kurmi, and 100 in Sardauna local government areas which were affected by a windstorm.

In his remarks, Manu thanked NEMA for the intervention and asked for more interventions as a crisis in the state had caused more damage and more persons were left homeless and stranded.

Manu told the team that the State Government had moved some Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from Kurmi to Takum.

According to him, the task is enormous, adding that, “this assistance is timely and appreciated”.

The deputy governor assured that the state government would always play its part in making the work of NEMA in the stateless stressful and ensure that the items got to only the intended beneficiaries.
