Tragedy struck the University of Benin (UNIBEN), after one of its students, 23yr old Uwaila Omozuwa was brutally raped and murdered within a Redeem Christian Church Premises in Benin City.

According to reports, the young girl was found in a pool of her own blood, brutally battered inside the church hall – nearby was a bloody fire extinguisher with which she had been attacked viciously.

The 100 level student of Microbiology was said to have gone to the church premises to read at the Redeem Christian Church of God, Edo Province 10, Ikpoba hill on Wednesday, May 27 as was her custom.

This time however she was beaten and raped by unknown men while her skull was bashed with a fire extinguisher.

According to sources from the Church, the chief security officer of the church had gone to retrieve the church keys from its keeper when he was told someone was already in the Church.

The church CSO was shocked to find Uwaila in a pool of blood, and a bloody fire extinguisher beside her. He went back to call the keeper of the key and his wife who helped evacuate the young girl to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, (UBTH) at Ugbowo.

She regained consciousness at the hospital where she narrated her ordeal before giving up the ghost.

Reacting to the death of it’s student, the management of the University of Benin expressed shock and anguish at the brutal rape and murder of Uwaila within the sanctity of a Church.

According to the UNIBEN Vice Chancellor, Lilian Salami, such brutal actions should not be condoned by any sane society.

She said the COVID-19 pandemic was already biting hard enough and no family deserved such additional pain.

The University commiserated with the family and prayed for the soul of the murdered student. It used the opportunity to call on its students to be mindful of the company they keep and the places they go alone.

It also announced that the University management has sent a delegation to the family of Uwaila.
