Black Canadian Woman, Regis Korchinski-Paquet Falls Off 24th Floor Balcony After Police Accosted Her

3 Min Read

A 29-year-old Canadian woman, identified as Regis Korchinski-Paquet has reportedly plunged to her death from her 24th floor, 100 High Park Ave apartment after Police Officers went into her residence last week.

The family of Regis Korchinski-Paquet is now demanding answers from police after the 29-year-old woman died after falling from a 24th-floor apartment balcony.

Ontario’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit, said Toronto Police officers responded to a domestic complaint at 100 High Park Ave., north of Bloor St. W., at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday.

The SIU says preliminary evidence suggests police went into an apartment and noticed the woman on the balcony.

According to a release, the unit says a short time later the woman fell from the balcony to the ground below. She died at the scene.

The family’s lawyer Knia Singh told reporters outside the building Thursday Korchinski-Paquet, over the past five years, began experiencing epilepsy and mental health episodes that sometimes needed help from police.

Singh said Korchinski-Paquet’s mother called police around 5:15 p.m. to the High Park apartment after a domestic conflict.

“I asked the police if they could take my daughter to CAMH (The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health), and my daughter ended up dead,” said Claudette Korchinski-Beals.

When police arrived at the family’s unit, Singh said officers met Korchinski-Paquet, her brother and mother in the hallway. Korchinski-Paquet “exchanged” words with the officers as they walked down the hall and then she told police she had to use the bathroom. The lawyer said the woman’s brother saw “multiple” officers following her and was stopped after he tried to go in.

The lawyer said, within a minute or two, the family heard a commotion and Korchinski-Paquet cry, “Mom, help. Mom, help. Mom, help.”

“The family wants answers to what happened. How can a call for assistance turn into a loss of life?” asked Singh.

Moments later, Singh said, there was quiet. Soon after, the officers confirmed Korchinski-Paquet was dead.

A woman who claimed Regis was her daughter accused police officers of pushing her to her death.

Since the occurrence of the bizarre incident, thousands of protesters have taken to the streets of Toronto to demonstrate against the harsh killing of Regis.
