African Development Bank Honours US Treasury Request to Probe Adesina

2 Min Read

President of the African Development Bank (AFDB), Dr. Adeniyi Adesina is expected to step down from his position after the board of the bank expressed support for fresh probe calls against the Nigerian by the United States Treasury.

Dr. Adesina had been exonerated by the ethics committee of the bank after whistle blower allegations said he appointed family members and cronies to top positions within the Abidjan based financial organisation. He was also accused of giving out contracts to friends and family members.

The US Treasury which is the largest foreign partner of the AFDB however expressed objections to the findings of the ethics committee and insisted that an independent probe of Dr. Adesina be carried out.

The Governments of Denmark, Sweden and Norway are also said to have backed the decision of the US Treasury calling for an independent probe of the Nigerian.

The US Treasury and Nigeria are the largest shareholders in the Pan African Bank alongside 53 other African and 27 European countries.

The calls for fresh investigations is coming just three months to the board of the meeting in which Dr. Adesina is expected to be confirmed for a fresh five year tenure as AFDB President.
