Imo Assembly passes law stripping Okorocha, Ihedioha, others of pension

Former Governors Rochas Okorocha, Emeka Ihedioha, Ikedi Ohakim and others can kiss their pensions good bye as the Imo State House of Assembly has passed a bill repealing the 2007 Pension Law.

The executive bill titled “A bill for a law to repeal the Imo State Governors and Speakers Pension and Privileges Law No 5 of 2007 (as amended)” was passed today on the floor of the Assembly.

The bill, which is awaiting the assent of Governor Hope Uzodinma, will strip ex-governors, their deputies and ex- speakers of their pensions and privileges when signed into law.

The House Majority Leader and sponsor of the bill, Hon. Uchegbu Ogbuagu, while leading the debate at plenary said it became necessary to repeal the 2007 law as it had no constitutional backing.

According to Ogbuagu, the huge resources being expended on the pensions and privileges of the ex-leaders could be better utilised to finance numerous developmental projects to better the lives of Imo residents.

For instance, he said, the law has made it mandatory that every three years, all the past governors would have their vehicles renewed at the detriment of the state.

Many lawmakers who contributed to the debate hailed Gov. Uzodinma and Speaker, Chiji Collins for agreeing to strip themselves of their entitlements in the interest of the state.
