Nigerien Soldiers Stepped in To Fight Bandits in Sokoto – Senator Alleges

2 Min Read

Senator Ibrahim Gobir representing Sokoto East, has alleged that soldiers from Niger Republic helped to fight off bandits in Sokoto State after the Nigerian military left besieged residents to their fate.

Speaking during plenary on Tuesday, the senator said residents of the state were abandoned to their fate as they suffered incessant attacks from bandits.

The Senator was contributing to a motion on the need for security to be enhanced in Niger State sponsored by Sabi Abdullahi representing Niger North.

Ibrahim Gobir said the security situation in Sokoto was so pathetic that Nigerian forces deliberately looked the other way while Nigerien soldiers protected them from bandits.

“The situation in Sokoto east as far as armed banditry is concerned is pathetic and tragic because it is only the Nigerien army that has been coming to their rescue while the Nigerian Army looks the other way round,” the senator lamented.

“Based on very reliable and verifiable information from the area, many a time, the people of the affected areas called on Nigerian army for help and protection against the bandits but no response.

The Nigerien army has been assisting in wading off the bandits, the very reason why not less than 5,000 people in the affected areas have migrated to Niger Republic for safety.”

Ibrahim Gobir declared that residents in Sokoto state get help from Niger Republic instead of Nigeria which meant to protect and provide for them.

He said neither the Nigerian Military or Police have been able to protect them from attacks in their own homes.
