COVID-19: Nigerian doctor, wife die 10 days apart in London

A 79-year-old retired doctor, Dr. James Oniah and his 61-year-old wife, Mary, have died in London, United Kingdom, 10 days apart from COVID-19.

James hailed from Onitsha, Anambra State while his wife was Zambian.

The couple died at the King George Hospital in Ilford, East London.

While the retired radiologist passed away on April 24, his care home director wife succumbed to the deadly virus on May 4.

They were survived by three children, including 25-year-old Okey.

Speaking about his late parents, Okey told the London Mail they were wonderful parents.

According to him, the family has yet to fully come to terms with their passing.

A native of Onitsha in Anambra State, Dr Oniah schooled at the University of Sussex before commencing his practice.

Over the course of many years, he worked as an agency radiologist before his retirement. He was a director of the Onitsha Progressive Foundation, a charity for elderly diaspora from Onitsha.

His wife, Mary Oniah (New Nyirongo) trained as a nurse and a midwife at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka, Zambia and St Georges and Roehampton University Teaching Hospital in South London and palliative care nursing at City, University of London.
