President Muhammadu Buhari has been urged to clampdown on South-West security outfit, Amotekun to avert bloodshed in the region.
A coalition of Yoruba groups under the platform of Yoruba Appraisal Forum (YAF) in a petition noted that violent confrontations could result if the excesses of the security outfit were not checked.
Convener of the forum, Adeshina Animashaun disclosed this in a Thursday statement.
YAF said that since coming on stream, personnel of the “ unorthodox and strange security arrangement” have been manhandling many individuals under the guise of enforcing law and order.
The group said the harassment of hapless Nigerians by the personnel of Amotekun got to a head during the restrictions necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
YAF said that some unscrupulous elements have been hiding under the cloak of Amotekun to take advantage of the inadequate police presence during the pandemic.
These elements, the group said, have been taking advantage of the situation “to sustain unprovoked attacks and intensify the provocation of other Nigerians.”
It maintained that the security outfit has been hijacked by these elements, hence the Federal Government must immediately intervene to prevent a breakdown of law and order stemming from the outfit’s actions.

Recall that the security outfit was launched on January 9 in Ibadan, Oyo State to curb kidnapping, banditry and other violent crimes in the South-West geopolitical zone.
