According to the President, the decision was necessitated by the hard economic conditions imposed by COVID-19 as he also imposed a limit to the amount of fuel government officials are allowed to consume within a stipulated period.

“Government will not order a new vehicle fleet for the Executive and Public Office Bearers for the period 2020-2025.

“Savings of 200 million Namibia dollars (about $10.8 million) will be directed to urgent priority areas.

The Namibian President wrote on Twitter.

He reiterated that Namibia has saved a lot of funds by encouraging government officials to do more with less over the last five years.

“Government spending has been reduced by 9%, annual travel and subsistence allowances have been cut by 62%,” he added.

Namibia with a population of 2.5 million people only has 16 confirmed coronavirus cases.
