A 113-year-old woman, Maria Branyas who is the oldest living person in Spain, has recovered from the deadly coronavirus.

A spokeswoman for the retirement home told AFP: “She survived the disease and is doing fine, She feels good now, she took a test last week and the result was negative,”

Branyas was isolated in her room for weeks, with only a single employee in protective gear allowed in to check on her.

Branyas daughter tweeted: “Now that she is well, she is wonderful, she wants to speak, to explain, to make her reflections, it is her again,”

Thomas Scharf, professor of social gerontology and president of the British Society of Gerontology, told Forbes: “The experience of Maria Branyas is remarkable. Her story offers a powerful reminder that people of all ages can survive coronavirus and continue to lead an active life afterwards. Her survival shows the weakness of approaches that rely on chronological age as a basis for limiting access to care,

“Universal health care systems that offer care based on individual need rather than ability to pay mean that more people like Maria Branyas can overcome coronavirus and spend valuable time with their loved ones.”
