Nigerians remember late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua 10 years after

3 Min Read

Nigerians have taken to social media to pay tributes to late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua on the 10th anniversary of his demise.

Yar’Adua, Nigeria’s 13th President, was sworn in on May 29, 2007.

He died on May 5, 2010, aged 59, a few months after returning from Saudi Arabia, where he was treated for pericarditis.

Before his election as president on April 21, 2007, he was governor of Katsina State, where current President Muhammadu Buhari hails from.

Nigerians who took to Twitter to remember the late president hailed his “sincerity of purpose”.

Some of the late president’s achievements in office, they said, included reducing petrol pump price, publicly declaring his assets, increasing minimum wage, increasing police salary, increasing armed forces salary, increasing NYSC allowance, instituting amnesty programme for Niger Delta militants all in less than three years in office.

The CEO, IPI Group, Adamu Garba II, wrote, “Nigeria is not really that difficult to lead once you have sincerity of purpose & clean heart, as exemplified by Late President Umaru Yar’Adua He was a leader of repute, pan-Nigerian, patriot to the core & a great family man. We witnessed his kindness, may Allah bless his soul.”

Another user, Yusuf Dano wrote, “On this day in 2010, President Umaru Musa Yar‘Adua died. He had his flaws, but he brought peace to NigerDelta, respected the rule of law & was the ONLY president with enough INTEGRITY to ever make public a complete declaration of his assets. May ur gentle soul continue to rest.”

Abdulrasheed wrote, “Today, I remember the selfless statesman, former President Umaru Musa Yar’adua, who passed on 10-years ago. His legacy of integrity as a great leader will always remain indelible in our hearts. May the mercy of Almighty Allah (SWT) continue to be upon him. Amin.”

@oyimzywrote, “President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua was a Prince who lived the life of a pauper. He was humble to a fault. A true patriot, devoid of ethnic or religious bias. He would always be remembered for his humility, integrity, transparency and his noble vision for this country. RIP Sir.”
