FCT Residents Flout Social Distancing Direction as Large Numbers Turnout at Banks

The number of confirmed cases of Coronavirus Disease in the FCT, Abuja may sky rocket in the coming weeks as the social distancing directive issued by the government is being violated as banks resume business activities in the Nation’s Administrative Capital.

 

Banks in the FCT, Lagos and Ogun were shut down for over four weeks following the lockdown directive of President Muhammadu Buhari in an bid to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

 

Nigeria’s Commander in Chief, President Buhari, on March 24, announced that the lockdown would be eased on Monday 4th April which permitted banks and some selected businesses to open in the FCT, Lagos and Ogun state.

The FCT administration passed the directive that social distancing and wearing of face mask in areas of gathering and public places would be compulsory for every person as part of the conditions for easing the lockdown.

Access Bank at the FCT

It was observed that the banks in Kubwa (a satellite town in FCT) were crowded with complete violation of the social distancing directive as customers of the banks were seen without face masks.

 

According to eye witnesses, the most crowded banks were Access Bank at Phase 4 and First Bank in P/W.

However, the Nigerian Police had passed a directive restricting commercial motorcycle riders from operating in the Satellite town, while tricycle operators were disallowed from carrying more than 3 passengers including the pilot.

 

The FCT has recorded 235 confirmed cases since outbreak of the virus making it the third highest in the country.
