Nigeria rescues female citizen advertised for sale by Lebanese

Nigerian authorities have rescued Peace Ufuoma, a Nigerian lady advertised for sale by a Lebanese man in Lebanon recently.

The suspect, Wael Jerro, had put up an advert on a Facebook group ‘Buy and Sell in Lebanon’ for Ufuoma’s sale at $1,000.

He shared a photo of the victim’s passport alongside some Arabic text calling for prospective buyers.

But he was arrested last week after the advert sparked outrage on the social media platform.

According to a Tuesday tweet from the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Ufuoma was rescued and is currently with the Nigerian Mission in Lebanon.

“The Nigerian girl who was trafficked and put for sale by a Lebanese man, Wael Jerro, has been rescued. She is presently with the Nigerian Mission in Lebanon.

“This is coming days after the arrest of Mr Jerro (for putting up Peace Ufuoma for sale). Many thanks to the Nigerian mission in Lebanon for swinging into immediate action.”

In a video shared by NIDCOM’s Director-General, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the victim can be heard explaining how she came to be in Jerro’s custody.

She explained that trouble started for her when the person she was working for told her he could no longer afford to pay her salary.
