COVID-19: Chief Judge of Lagos State Approves Remote Hearing of Cases

The chief Judge of Lagos State, Kazeem Alogba has approved the remote hearing of cases via Skype and Zoom in the state judiciary.

The new practice made necessary by the COVID-19 inspired lockdown in Lagos State was signed by the Chief Judge on April 27.

The new law enables lawyers and litigants file their cases electronically, while necessary charges will be communicated via email, whatsapp and text message.

The latest guidelines also allows the use of a suitable technology to determine court proceedings, thereby ensuring efficient use of available judicial and administrative resources.

“Remote hearings shall be by Zoom, Skype for business or any other video communication method approved by the Chief Judge.”

Paragraph 16 of the new order reads.

The new measures are expected to take effect from May 4 and according to the Chief Judge, it is to ensure a timely and efficient disposal of cases.
