Namibia Amends Air Service Act, Allowing Flag Carrier to Fly Globally

1 Min Read

Air Namibia has been granted a licence that enables the airliner to fly anywhere in the world, an official said on Tuesday.

The move is aligned with the strategic expansion of the airline in feeding the world with passengers, cargo and related air transport services, according to the national flag carrier’s spokesperson Paul Nakawa.

“Our airline is certified to operate charter flights to transport passengers, evacuation and cargo,” Nakawa said.

“To do this, we needed a licence for non-scheduled flights that we charter on an ad-hoc basis, especially now that we are catering for COVID-19 related repatriations, as well as transporting necessary consignments to and from Namibia.”

The airline has approached the World Health Organisation to distribute COVID-19 materials worldwide, especially in the African region, Nakawa added.

Previously, Air Namibia was only permitted to operate in Africa and Europe.

The airline suspended all its flights on March 18.
