Neighbour hacks man to death for not allowing him watch movies in Lagos

Lagos Police Commissioner, Hakeem Odumosu

A man identified simply as Habeeb has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for hacking his neighbour, Taiwo Eluyemi, to death over the right to watch movies.

While the suspect is said to be in his late 20s, the victim was said to be in his late 40s.

Eluyemi, who resided on Taiwo Street, Mafoluku, Oshodi area of Lagos, was said to be very popular on the street.

Residents said many youths usually converged in his home to watch European league football matches and movies.

Habeeb and his friends reportedly went to the house on Wednesday to watch movies but Eluyemi turned them back in line with new social distancing rules occasioned by COVID-19.

The Punch quoted neighbours as saying that Habeeb took offence with Eluyemi’s action and the duo had an altercation that was eventually settled when some people intervened.

However, Habeeb allegedly waylaid him on Thursday and hacked him to death with a cutlass.

“The man went to pick his son from the church not knowing Habeeb was already looking for him.

“He attacked the man with a cutlass and inflicted injuries on his back and left hand. He bled to death on the spot.

“The suspect has been handed over to the Makinde Police Station,” a tenant in the area, Tope Akande, said.

Confirming the incident, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, said, “The suspect is already in custody. Two of them are friends. They had a misunderstanding. We are investigating the circumstances that led to the murder.”
