UITH COVID-19 Saga: Kwara NMA Awaits Committee Report

2 Min Read

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Kwara chapter, says it is waiting for the report from its Medical Ethics Committee on the alleged misconduct of Prof. Alakija Salami in the management of a suspected deceased COVID-19 patient who died at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) on April 2.

The state NMA Chairman, Dr Kolade Solagberu, told newsmen on Tuesday in Ilorin that until the committee submitted its report the association is a constraint to act.

”All the doctors who had contacts with the embattled Dr Salami in the management of the deceased are currently on safe self-quarantine.

”Hence, it is difficult to get any information from them as the investigation intensifies.

”And it is not the best for us to call them on the phone to know what transpired in the course of management of the deceased patient.

”So, until the ethics committee completes its investigation and submit its report, we will know the next line of action as we can’t rely on social media information,” Dr Solagberu said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Prof. Salami, a consultant with UITH, was suspended by the authorities following his alleged misconduct in the management and eventual death of the suspected COVID-19 patient in the state.
