Former President Goodluck Jonathan has commiserated with the government and people of Togo on the death of former African Union Secretary-General, Edem Kodjo.

The ex-Togolese Prime Minister died on Saturday, April 11 in Paris, France aged 82.

Taking to social media on Monday, Jonathan wrote, “I offer my deepest condolences to the Government and people of the Republic of Togo over the death of H.E. Edem Kodjo, former Secretary-General of the African Union and ex-Prime Minister of Togo.

“He will continue to live in the hearts and minds of his compatriots as Togo’s foremost reformist and statesman who helped carve a democratic path for his country.”

Kodjo was Prime Minister of Togo from 1994 to 1996 and from 2005 to 2006, under the leadership of former president, Gnassingbe Eyadema.

He equally served as Minister of Finance from 1973 to 1976 and as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1976 to 1978 before his election as the Secretary-General of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) at its summit Khartoum, Sudan in 1978.
