Members of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Asaba, Delta have embarked on infefinite strike over an alleged incessant harassment by security operates enforcing lockdown order in the State.
Delta State government had issued a lockdown order in a bid to contain the spread of the deadly coronavirus which however includes certain fields, including hospitals.
However, members of the association have alleged that security operatives continued harassing them despite presenting valid means of identification proving that they are doctors and medical practitioners.
The President of ARD, Asaba FMC chapter, Osifo Patrick Nwabunor, who disclosed this during a media briefing in Asaba, held that health workers have been subjected to constant harassment by the police.
Nwabunor explained that the harassment which provoked their action to embark on “total shutdown of their services indefinitely until our safety and security is guaranteed.” occured on Thursday, when one of the doctors, who was going for an emergency, was stopped and harassed and when other colleagues came to his rescue, the police allegedly fired tear-gassed at them.
Nwabunor said:
“These are challenging times in view of the COVID-19 but if our safety is not guaranteed, we will maintain the total shutdown.”
