Apple has begun designing and producing face shields to protect health care workers in the United States during the coronavirus pandemic.
Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook made the announcement in a video on twitter. He revealed that Apple has sourced more than 20 million masks through its global supply chain and is working with governments to donate them where they’re needed.
The first of Apple’s newly developed face shields were delivered to Kaiser Permanente hospital facilities located in California’s Santa Clara Valley.
He said: “We’re working continuously and closely with governments at all levels to ensure they’re donated to places of greatest need.”
Apple plans to ship 1 million face shields by the end of this week, and 1 million per week after that, according to Cook.
According to Cook, doctor feedback was very positive. The face shields are fully adjustable.

He added: “These pack flat, one hundred per box. Each shield is assembled in less than two minutes and is fully adjustable. We’re sourcing materials and manufacturing in the US and China.”
