I’m impressed with the way Nigeria is tackling COVID-19 – UN Secretary General

2 Min Read

Antonio Guterres, United Nations (UN) Secretary-General has commended Nigeria for the measures adopted in tackling Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country.

Guerres said Nigeria is handling the crisis better than most developed countries in the world.

This is coming after President Muhammad Buhari declared a total lockdown on states with highest number of COVID-19 patients, a move that has been adopted by other state governors.

UN Sec-Gen said “I have to say this; some of these developing countries have shown a remarkable capacity to respond.

“I was quite impressed to see, for instance, Nigeria putting in place and immediately establishing a hospital. “And I saw difficulties in countries that are much more developed to do quickly the same.”

The UN Chief further called for a global ceasefire, urging war-torn countries  like Syria, Libya and Yemen to lay down arms and unite to fight the coronavirus pandemic threatening the human race.

“The worst is yet to come,” Guterres said making a reference to war-torn countries

“The COVID-19 storm is now coming to all these theatres of conflict.”
“The virus has shown how swiftly it can move across borders, devastate countries and upend lives.”

“But there is a huge distance between declarations and deeds — between translating words into peace on the ground and in the lives of people,”

“In many of the most critical situations, we have seen no let-up in fighting — and some conflicts have even intensified.” Guterres said.
