The Lagos state government appears to be the only Coronavirus infested state that has signified interest in starting clinical trials for Chloroquine to be used in treatment of the deadly disease.

This comes after the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) approved clinical trials for the malaria drug as Nigeria struggles to contain Coronavirus in about 12 states across the country.

The DG of NAFDAC, Mrs. Mojisola Adeyeye confirmed this to Punch Newspaper on Friday.

She said no other state had signified interest in the possible use of the malaria drug to treat the virus.

Lagos state has the highest cases of Coronavirus infection in the country with 109 confirmed cases.

NAFDAC approved Chloroquine for Clinical trials in Nigeria on March 20, 2020. About three years after the government banned it’s use in 2017.

“NAFDAC is not approving chloroquine as a product that can be used for coronavirus because there is no submission to us for registration, but because it is under clinical trials, NAFDAC approves medicines meant for clinical trials. Therefore, the medicine is being approved just for the clinical trials.”

The DG said at the time.
