Google Set To Support Fact-Checkers With $6.5m To Fight Against COVID-19 Misinformation

Google has announced that it will be giving $6.5m to fund fact-checkers and non-profit organizations committed to tackling misinformation about coronavirus pandemic globally.

 

According to the tech company, funds will be made available to support media outlets and fact-checkers working to fight misinformation and fake news regarding Coronavirus.

 

Google, who disclosed this through its Google News Initiative, said that it will be supporting Africa Check in Nigeria, Data Leads in partnership with BOOM Live in India and Question Hub.

 

Reports claim that the tech company also intends to train 1,000 journalists across India and Nigeria to acquire skills in spotting  health misinformation.

 

 

Google said its online resources were being updated to support the vital work journalists were doing and the GNI Training Centre had tools for data journalism and verification in 16 languages.

Alexios Mantzarlis, the News and Information Credibility Lead, Google News Initiative News Lab said health authorities had warned that an overabundance of information could prove as a negative measure which may result in difficulty for people to obtain credible and reliable guidance about the coronavirus pandemic.
