2 Min Read

In what seems like a story from a Nollywood movie, a 29 year old man has been charged with cheating, jailed and held on N100,000 bond in Nasarawa State.

According to Tribune

An 18-year-old  unemployed woman, Esther Musa, of Masaka in  Nasarawa State has dragged her lover, 29-year-old Mustapha Shaibu,  to court for impregnating her.
Mustapha, who also resides in Masaka, is facing a one-count charge of cheating at the Grade 1 Area Court, Aso Pada, Mararaba, near Abuja.
Esther told the court that the accused had been her lover for close to 19 months and was responsible for her three-month-old pregnancy.
“Mustapha is  my lover. He impregnated  and abandoned me. He’s  now dating another lady in Masaka.

“I’m not working and he’s no more taking care of me. I feel cheated  and that’s why I’ve  come to  court,” she said.
In his response, Mustapha, who claimed he lost his job last month, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The accused, however, accepted responsibility  for   the pregnancy.
“I’m responsible for the pregnancy, but I did not cheat her.

“She told me  her rent had expired and would not want to stay in the same area again. I then pleaded with her to give me time to  gather  a reasonable amount to rent another apartment. I still love her,” he stated.
The judge, Mr Albert Maga, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 with a surety in like sum.
According to Maga, the surety must be a responsible citizen with landed property and must reside within the jurisdiction of the court.
He ordered the surety to write an undertaking that the accused would not harass or intimidate the complainant pending the determination of the case.
