COVID-19: NJC Shuts Down Court Proceedings In Nigeria

CJN Tanko Mohammed

Court Proceedings nationwide have been shut down by the National Judicial Council (NJC) as part of precautionary measures to contain the outbreak of Coronavirus in Nigeria.

According to a directive of the Chairman of NJC, who is the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Tanko Muhammad, the decision is to take effect from Tuesday, March 24.

In a statement issued by NJC on its website on Monday, March 23, all heads of courts are to enforce compliance across the country, and put measures in place to strictly accommodate only “matters that are urgent, essential or time-bound according to the nation’s extant laws.”

Justice Muhammad further said that Federal Judicial bodies are to continue with their official duties and restricted the number of attendance for meetings and conferences to the stipulated number by the Federal Government which is 50.

The First Lady of Nigeria, Aisha Buhari, has urged the state governments to call for the total lockdown of all activities across the country over the continuous spread of COVID-19.

According to the First Lady, shutting down school activities of children is a counterproductive measure against the spread of the disease if workers, parents of those children, continually report at work, thereby exposing them.

Aisha Buhari said this shortly after the number of persons infected with COVID-19 in Nigeria spiked up to 36 on Monday, with one death recorded.

Aisha tweeted;

“It is commendable that state governors have closed down schools; however, this could be counterproductive if parents are still going to work.

“We should not isolate students and expose their parents. “Let us remember that they will meet at home.

“#TotalLockDown

“#StayAtHome.”
