The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Academy in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State has been designated as an African Regional Centre of Excellence in Road Traffic Management.

The FRSC Corps Marshal, Mr Boboye Oyeyemi disclosed this during the inauguration of the Assistant Corps Commander (ACC) and Deputy Corps Commander (DCC) Promotion Course at the FRSC Academy in Udi on Tuesday.

Oyeyemi said that Nigeria was among the three countries in Africa that got such designation, adding that the other two countries are Cameroon and Tanzania.

He said that the African Development Bank would be providing funds for the development of the centre.

“This will require expansion. When the funding comes, we will need to put more structures here because it will be a bilingual centre,” he said.

Oyeyemi said that Nigeria was seen as committed in the road traffic sector “and that is why these positive developments are coming our way.”

The corps marshal said the academy needed additional 15 hectares of land for the expansion of the academy in Udi to accommodate its numerous programmes.

Oyeyemi said that the request had already been conveyed to the state government.

He said that the academy which was already occupying 35 hectares of land had attracted some investments which had made the space inadequate.

He said that apart from the upgrade of the facility to a degree awarding institution, the facilities in the academy would also host the Command and Staff College of the FRSC.

The corps marshal said that the academy would soon start its postgraduate programmes in affiliation with Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).

“We are making progress. The last set of inspectors from the National Universities Commission (NUC) is here few weeks ago.

“We are going to commence our postgraduate programmes in transport related courses as we have fulfilled all the requirements,” he said.

Oyeyemi said that the next step was the inauguration of the administrative block of the academy after which admission vacancies would be announced.

The corps marshal said that the command and staff college would take care of the personnel requirements of the FRSC and those of military and paramilitary organisations.

He said that the most successful story was the designation of the facility as a centre of excellence in traffic management.
