The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) says it makes N6 billion daily from imports since the closure of Nigeria’s land borders with neighbouring countries in West Africa.
The NCS Comptroller-General, Colonel Hammed Ali (rtd.) made this known on Tuesday, February 18 at a forum in Lagos where he was represented by a senior customs official.
Ali added that the sums being realized from the ports would help the federal government provide more infrastructures.
According to him, before the border closure, NCS had engaged the customs of neighboring countries severally, drawing their attention to the need to comply with ECOWAS protocols on the transit of goods and persons.
Earlier, The Herald reported that Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) proposed that tax be levied on carbonated drinks in order to generate more revenue for the government.
Hameed Ali, Comptroller General of the Service made the proposition to the House of Representatives Committee on Finance on Thursday.
The customs boss disclosed levying taxes on carbonated drinks which is highlyy consuumed by Nigerians will speed up the achievement of revenue target. Hameed Ali further said that alcoholic drinks and tobacco have excise taxes that they pay.
