The Senate president of Nigeria, Ahmad Lawan, on Tuesday, February 18, called for installation of security gadgets at the National Assembly complex in Abuja.

Lawan made this call to security operatives during an emergency meeting with the leadership of the Senate on Tuesday,

He stressed that to this effect, an urgent arrangement will be made to tighten security at the complex and also make sure officers are more on red alert.

The Senate boss said this became necessary after he was informed by the Department of State Security (DSS) of threats of attack on the building.

He said: “Personally I had a report from the DSS that we had a security threat. Many unknown and uninvited people came or are coming into the National Assembly complex and we felt we shouldn’t take this lightly.

“From today we have to find temporary solution to support the security arrangement here. We will find a more permanent solution by the time the entire environment is remodeled.”

He said the security of lives and properties is the key responsibility of both the executive and legislative arms of government.

As part of its moves to avert the threats, Lawan informed Nigerians that the Senate has set up an ad-hoc committee.

The Senate president, however, felt concern that with the rising spate of insecurity in the country, it now time to heighten security consciousness especially in and around the National Assembly.
