Still reeling from the killing of 30 residents by bandits, Katsina State has witnessed another tragedy as 22 persons were burnt to death in a road accident on Saturday.

The accident occurred near Kafur town along Kankia-Danja Road.

It involved two buses and dozens of persons that were escorting a newly-wedded lady to her husband’s home.

The J5 buses were said to have had a head-on collision.

While 17 persons were reportedly injured in the crash, the bride escaped unhurt.

“The two vehicles burst into flames after the crash and 22 persons were burnt to death,” The Sun quoted an eyewitness, Shafi’u Suleiman, as saying.

He added that most of the victims were women and children escorting the bride to her husband’s house.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Katsina Sector Command spokesman, Abubakar Usman, confirmed the incident.

According to him, 11 other persons injured in the incident were rushed to the  General Hospital at Malumfashi.

He added that those that were burnt beyond recognition were buried according to Islamic rites by the community and religious leaders.

The Herald recalls that bandits invaded Tsauwa and Dankar villages in Batsari LGA of Katsina on Friday night, killing 30 persons and setting animals and foodstuffs ablaze.
