JUST IN: Ekiti Assembly Passes Amotekun Bill

2 Min Read

The Ekiti State House of Assembly has passed a bill to establish the Ekiti State Security Network Agency and Amotekun Corps.

The bill is expected to be transmitted to Governor Kayode Fayemi for assent to become a law.

Speaker of the House, Funminiyi Afupe hailed the members for displaying “leadership and commitment to the bill” by giving it accelerated hearing.

However, he said that the due process of lawmaking was observed in passing the bill, which passed through First and Second Reading on Thursday. After that, the House committed it to the Committee on Security for proper legislative scrutiny before the House adjourned sitting till Friday.

Lawmakers were said to have debated the bill exhaustively on Thursday and emphasized its importance to maintaining security in the state.

The Herald recalls that the Ogun State Government on Tuesday approved the proposal for the creation of the Western Nigeria Security Network codenamed Amotekun in the state. The State Executive Council said it would soon transmit a bill to the assembly to that effect.

The Osun State Government followed suit on Thursday.

Governors in the South-West geopolitical zone launched Amotekun in Ibadan, Oyo State on Thursday, January 9 to combat kidnapping, banditry and other violent crimes in the region.
