“His arrest is for extradition purposes,’’ Mexican Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero told Formula radio on Wednesday.

Spanish police confirmed the 45-year-old’s arrest in southern Spain.

Lozoya is one of the highest-profile suspects wanted on corruption charges in Mexico, and his arrest is a success for President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who has vowed to root out corruption.

The Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht has admitted to having paid 788 million dollars in bribes in 12 countries, 10 of them in Latin America.

Bribes paid in Mexico amounted to 10.5 million dollars between 2010 and 2014, according to the U.S Justice Department. Lozoya has denied receiving bribes from Odebrecht.
