The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the deregistration of 74 political parties due to failure to meet standard requirements of the commission
Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the commission made the announcement at a Press conference which held in Abuja on Thursday, Jan 6, 2020.

In the Chairman’s words, “Nigeria now has 18 registered political parties”.
He disclosed the 72 deregistered parties failed to satisfy the conditions of the Fourth Alteration to the 1999 Constitution.
Before the announcement, Nigeria had 92 political parties in total.
Yakubu also announced Saturday September 19, 2020 and Saturday October 10, 2020 for governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states respectively.
