Plateau killing

Twenty-three persons killed by suspected herdsmen in Kwatas community of Bokkos local government area, Plateau State last Sunday were on Thursday given mass burial.

The mass burial which took place in the community around 2.00 pm was witnessed by hundreds of sympathisers, many of whom were decked in black attires.

Mourners, most of whom were children, women and the aged, had gathered at Luna Mortuary in Bokkos town for a brief farewell ceremony as early as 6:30 am.

Many shop owners in the area were said to have taken a unanimous decision to close for the day, while some schools joined in to protest the killings.

Eyewitnesses said that the community was in mourning as the bodies were lowered into the ground.

The Herald can report that those buried were 13 people attacked and killed on Sunday night in Kwattas. Two had died on Monday and eight others were killed in different parts of Bokkos together with those who died as a result of fatal injuries at the state hospital.

This is just as the Plateau State Police Command transferred to Abuja some Fulani and community leaders in the affected communities of Bokkos, Mangu, Barkin-Ladi and Riyom local government areas – the epicentre of the mass killing.

Governor Simon Lalong had ordered the state Commissioner of Police, Isaac Akinmoyede, to arrest Fulani Ardos and community leaders in the affected communities until the perpetrators of the killings are brought to book.
