There are conditions which regulate succession/appointment of a new Emir in ancient and modern Hausa/Fulani Kingdoms, namely, Kingship conventions, military conditions, political conditions, and administration requirements. The conditions which shall underplay the appointment of a successor of the late Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, are not far from Kinship customs, military-cum-political-cum-administration requirement of the timeas is obvious in the history of Kingship/succession in Hausa/Fulani land from time immemorial.

What Smith, a trustworthy historian of Hausa inheritance and succession practice means here, is that succession to the throne of an Emir or Sultan in Hausa/Fulani Kingdomschanges; there have never been definitive conditions or unchangeable factors which underplay the appointment of a new Emir or a Sultan in Hausa.
What is more obvious and factual and consistent is the advice of electoral councils, who are senior high-profile heads of big territory in the kingdom. The advice, sometimes, is either in favour of the youngest son or brother of the late Emir/Sultan.
