Polygamy Will Keep The North Poor And Obsolete -Sanusi

2 Min Read

Muhammadu Sanusi II, the Emir of Kano, has disclosed that the North will continue to remain obsolete and rot in extreme poverty if they don’t change their culture.

According to the emir, the abject culture of being married to more than one wife without the financial capacity to care for one and birthing many children is the sole reason for the North’s extreme poverty, The PUNCH reported.

Sanusi said this at the maiden convocation of the Federal University, Gusau while moderating a paper presented by Dr Usman Bugahi titled “The Role of Universities in Nation Building”.

He said,

“There are people who cannot afford to feed one wife but are ready to marry three wives and have more children than they cannot feed, talk less of paying for their school fees?”

“The poverty level of the North is 80 per cent; while in the south, the percentage is 20 per cent, simply because of the culture of marrying many wives and producing many children who, in the end, are left on the streets to beg for what to eat.”

Emir Sanusi further said that when a man divorces his wife with many children, those children end up being wanderers and eventual criminals, a situation which will be gruesomely uncontrollable in decades to come.
