Firmino scores late as Liverpool edge Wolves to increase lead to 16 points

3 Min Read

Roberto Firmino’s late winner separated the league leaders and Wolves and indeed widens the gap at the top to 16 points.

Wolves were brave and have Liverpool a run for their money probably more than any other team have this season.

The Reds had taken the lead in the first half when Jordan Henderson headed home a Trent-Alexander Arnold’s cross but Raul Jimenez equalised for Wolves at the turn of the interval.

Without Sadio Mane due to injury the Reds were a tad slower breaking forward as the hosts pressed. It took a lot of heroics from Alisson to keep the home side at bay.

Liverpool have now gone 40 games unbeaten in the Premier League since early 2019.

What they said

Jurgen Klopp speaking at the end of the match said;

“We changed the system two or three times, we calmed it down. We had incredible chances in the first half and then at the end it was a magic moment from Bobby.

“The boys are human. It was a little bit up and down. We had discussion on the pitch, there was stuff to improve but set-pieces can bring us back in the game, a good bit of skill can bring us back in the game. Wolves were really strong but it’s clear we could settle again.

“You just have to find a way to win and have someone who makes the perfect decision and that was Bobby again.”

Wolves’ manager Nuno Espirito Santo was satisfied with his team’s performance despite the loss;

“It was a good game. We played well. There is nothing to be disappointed about. Getting the momentum was important.

“We defended well, we were well organised. This is what we want. We want to compete and keep on growing.

“We had in the last moment of the game [the chance to equalise. It’s about creating. Things will come naturally.

“I’m happy when we perform well. We faced a fantastic team. This is the standards we want.”

Livepool’s captain Jordan Henderson was the man of the match.
