APC suffers defeat in Bauchi as Supreme Court upholds Muhammed’s election

3 Min Read

The Supreme Court has confined the election of Bala Muhammed of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as governor of Bauchi State.

The unanimous judgment read by Justice Dattijo Mohammed on Monday, January 20, dismissed the appeal by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its governorship candidate, Muhammed Abubakar.

The seven-member panel of the apex court held that the evidence of the appellants’ witnesses at the election tribunal was inadmissible.

Reading the lead judgement on Monday, Justice Mohammed held that the witness’ statement of the appellant was incompetent and of no value.

The judge said the witness statement in the face of the law amounted to no evidence at all.

According to Justice Mohammed, the court dismissed the appeal on the ground that the witness’ deposition was made in Hausa but only adopted the English translation without attaching the original statement deposed to in Hausa.

Earlier, The Herald reported that Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, said there is a high chance that the All Progressive Congress (APC) will no longer exist after President Buhari’s tenure.

Fayemi who was instrumental to the emergence of Adams Oshiomhole as the Chairman of the APC alongside other Governors, said this in reaction to the move to remove the former Edo State Governor as the party’s chairman.

Fayemi stated that if processes and procedures are not institutionalized, the APC won’t be in existence when Buhari leaves office.

Fayemi said: “The governors were instrumental to the emergence of Adams Oshiomhole as the chairman of the party. He was their colleague, so they worked together. I don’t think there’s a view about the leadership of the party in the PGF. I think there’s a clear view that the party can do a lot more than it has done.

“If we are not careful; if we do not institutionalise processes and procedures in the party and make it more inclusive than it is, we will not have a party when President Muhammadu Buhari leaves government. This is because he is the unifying force of our party.
