Soleimani: Why we’re protesting in Nigeria – Shi’ites

1 Min Read

Shi’a group, the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) has confirmed it staged a protest in Abuja following the slaying of Iranian general, Qassem Soleimani by the US government.

A US military drone attack killed Soleimani in Baghdad, Iraq on Friday. The killing has sparked condemnation in a large section of the Arab world.

The IMN said it however engaged in the peaceful protest to condemn Soleimani’s killing as well as demand the release of its leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife Zeenat, who have been detained since December 2015.

IMN spokesman, Ibrahim Musa, confirmed that the protest has been ongoing for three days.

The Herald gathered that many FCT residents scampered for safety Monday after seeing the Shi’ites on a procession around Banex plaza area of Wuse.

Some of the group’s members also burnt a US flag in apparent solidarity with the Shi’a-majority Iran over the killing of Soleimani.

Many of the Shi’ites were said to have borne placards with various inscriptions expressing anti-US sentiments and demanding their leader’s release.

The FCT police command said it was unaware of the protest.
