Yesterday at the TechCrunch Disrupt Berlin, Samsung Electronic’s President Young Sohn revealed that the company had managed to sell 1 million units of the Galaxy Fold smartphones. Between October and now sales volume rose to 500,000 units.

“And I think that the point is, we’re selling [a] million of these products,” Sohn said. “There’s a million people that want this product at $2000.”

Yesterday’s event focused majorly on growth through innovation. He commented on how sales on such an expensive and controversial device could still hit such volume in sales, he said, if they kept devices like the Galaxy Fold in labs, they wouldn’t get the input needed refinement and further development.

Samsung indeed got huge feedback about the foldable device.

The foldable phone was first announced early this year at MWC 2019, where it showcased alongside a handful of foldable devices with competitors likes of Xiaomi and Huawei also showcasing a foldable of their own. It later launched in April where early users complained about cracked screens among multiple problems.

The product was relaunched in September and this time it was more durable though the screen still had issues.

Media sources report that Samsung has plans to sell 6 million units of the foldable device in 2020.

Even at a very steep price of $2000 it almost certain that the device will be coming to Nigeria so the pro-Samsung community in Nigeria will have access to this device at some point in 2020. At this time, it is unclear whether the price will be dialled back just a bit but that’s a possibility that Samsung may consider as it targets its 6 million mark.
