Police dismantle kidnappers’ camps, arrest suspect in FCT

The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) said it has dismantled kidnappers camps and arrested a suspect along Kwali-Kwaita axis of the territory.

The Deputy Police Public Relations Officer in the FCT, ASP Mariam Yusuf, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja on Monday.

She said the camps were dismantled during Counter-Kidnapping Operations in furtherance to the command’s efforts to wipe out kidnappers from the FCT, particularly along Kwali-Kwaita axis.

Yusuf said the operation, using overt/covert means dismantled the camps and dislodged the kidnappers bases prompting them to seek refuge.

“The fleeing kidnappers while scampering for safety entered the highway shot at an oncoming vehicle and killed four persons along that axis. The swift intervention of Police Operatives led to the immediate arrest of one of the suspected kidnappers while efforts are on top gear to apprehend his cohorts,” she said.

She said the command commiserate with the families of the deceased and pledged to provide maximum security in the territory to ensure hitch-free Yuletide.

Earlier, The Herald gathered that two lecturers, Adamu Chonoko of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria and Umar Chonoko of Kaduna Polytechnic, abducted 10 days ago in Kaduna, had escaped from their kidnappers’ den.

Spokesperson of Kebbi Indegenes Resident in Kaduna and Garkuwan Wakilin Sarkin Zurun Kaduna, Garba Muhammad confirmed the development to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday.
Garba said: “the two siblings and indigenes of Kebbi State have escaped from their kidnappers and arrived the palace of Wakilin Sarkin Zurun Kaduna and were received by the Wakili around 11:51 am today (Sunday). We thank Allah for their escape.”
According to him, Umar Chonoko went to deliver the N2 million and a motorcycle ransom to secure the release of his brother, Adamu but was also held by the kidnappers who demanded additional N5 million ransom.
