The three-time Grand Slam champion said he feared this may be the final tournament of his career due to a hip injury.

The Scot currently ranks 289th in the world but has been given a protected number two ranking going into the Australian Open. The Australian Open said Murray would “return to the main draw with a protected ranking of number two and restored physical powers”.

Murray will play world number 12, Italian, Fabio Fognini in the second round of the Shanghai Open on Tuesday.

Australian Open organizers announced that former World number one and four-time Grand Slam winner, 36-year old, could make a return in this year’s tournament in the women event.

The Australian Open begins on the 20th of January 2020.
