Last minute penalty keeps Liverpool firmly on top

Brendan Rogers’ Leceister City gave last season’s champions league winners a run for their money when they almost broke Liverpool’s winning run at Anfield.

Leceister’s James Maddison cancelled Sadio Mane’s lead at the setting up for a tense ten minutes at the Anfield. The league leaders looked set to drop points for the first time in 17 premier league matches with Liverpool fans holding their breathe and the Leceister fans fancying their team causing a major upset but on the 90th minute Marc Albrighton ill-timed challenge saw Sadio Mane go down in the box for a penalty.

James Milner stepped up and converted from the resulting spotkick erupting the stadium and sending the Anfield fans into a frenzy. Liverpool won 2-1.

Speaking after the match, Brendan Rogers said the penalty did not look clear and obvious enough for a penalty and he thought Mane made the most of the challenge.

“We are bitterly disappointed to concede the penalty,” added Rodgers, making his first return to Anfield since being sacked by the Reds in October 2015.

“Sadio Mane made the most of the contact. I don’t think if it had not been given by the referee it would have been overturned by VAR. When the referee gives decisions it is hard for them to overrule it.”

On the other hand Liverpool manage Jurgen Klopp thinks it was a penalty and was rightly given.

” Without luck we cannot win the amount of games we have won, but over the 90 minutes we deserved it,” added Klopp.

Speaking about Hamza Choudhury’s on Mo Salah he said “it was dangerous as hell. ”

Choudhury got a yellow card while who received treatment eventually limped off the pitch.

“How can he do it? The ball is far away. He has to calm down. This is not the first situation. Super player, but these kind of challenges? No,” said Klopp.

“I don’t need to be a football manager to know this kind of challenge can cause a serious injury. I just need two eyes.”

Brendan Rogers disagrees the challenge was malicious saying that Choudhury is a good person and couldn’t have intentionally wanted to hurt Mo.
